1.1.02 & 1.1.03: Safety Rules – Safety Signs – Hazards

Safety Rules, Safety Signs, and Hazards

Introduction

Safety is the cornerstone of any technical trade, especially for electricians who handle live circuits and electrical machinery daily. Adhering to safety rules not only protects the worker but also prevents damage to equipment and materials. This post discusses the necessity of safety rules, key safety practices, common hazards, and workplace safety signs essential for electricians.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson, readers will be able to:

  • Explain the necessity of adopting safety rules in electrical work.
  • List key safety rules to be followed by electricians.
  • Understand how to treat a person in case of electric shock or injury.

Necessity of Safety Rules

Electricians work in environments with numerous occupational hazards, making safety consciousness essential.

  • Safe working habits save lives, money, and materials.
  • Following proper procedures reduces accidents and equipment damage.
  • Remember the proverb: “Electricity is a good servant but a bad master.”

Key Safety Rules for Electricians

To ensure a safe working environment, electricians must follow these rules:

  1. Only qualified personnel should perform electrical work.
  2. Avoid working on live circuits; if unavoidable, use rubber gloves and insulated mats.
  3. Use screwdrivers with wooden or PVC-insulated handles.
  4. Use fuses of the correct capacity for each circuit.
  5. Replace or remove fuses only after switching off the main power.
  6. Use accessories with the BIS (ISI) mark.
  7. Stand on wooden stools or insulated ladders when working on live circuits.
  8. Always wear safety belts when working at heights or on poles.
  9. Ensure all electrical connections are tight and secure.
  10. Use earth connections for all electrical appliances.
  11. For dead circuits, remove fuse grips and display a ‘Men on line’ board.
  12. Never use water on electrical equipment.

Hazards: Electric Shock and Injuries

Electric shock severity depends on current magnitude and duration of contact. Key points for handling electrical injuries:

  • Ensure the victim is not in contact with live supply before providing aid.
  • Effects can range from tingling to severe pain, burns, or unconsciousness.
  • Apply respiratory resuscitation for unconscious victims not breathing.
  • For severe bleeding, make the victim lie down and elevate the injured part above the body level.
  • Apply direct pressure to wounds to control bleeding.

Workplace Safety Signs

Safety signs communicate hazards and precautions. They are divided into four categories:

1. Prohibition Signs 🔴

  • Shape: Circular
  • Color: Red border with black symbol on white background
  • Meaning: Indicates actions that must not be performed
  • Example: No Smoking

2. Mandatory Signs 🔵

  • Shape: Circular
  • Color: White symbol on blue background
  • Meaning: Specifies required actions
  • Example: Wear hand protection

3. Warning Signs 🟡

  • Shape: Triangular
  • Color: Yellow background with black border and symbol
  • Meaning: Warns of potential hazards
  • Example: Caution: Risk of electric shock

4. Information Signs 🟢

  • Shape: Square or oblong
  • Color: White symbols on green background
  • Meaning: Provides safety-related information
  • Example: First aid point

Conclusion

Adhering to safety rules and recognizing hazards is essential for every electrician. Understanding workplace safety signs, practicing caution, and knowing emergency procedures not only saves lives but also enhances professional competence and workplace efficiency.
